The HTCIA Asia Pacific Chapter was proud to welcome some of Hong Kong's leading experts to provide a free hands-on workshop for members only on Saturday 26th July 2008.

Alan Ho, Anthony Lai and Sang Young of PISA all contributed to a fascinating study of the latest threats to WiFi and Bluetooth enabled systems - particularly timely given HK's recent roll-out of free WiFi services in the territory.

Tuesday 24th June 2008 saw an evening presentation by Chapter President, Mr. Paul Jackson at the excellent Microsoft Facilities in Pacific Place III in Admiralty.

The talk focused on the use of USB devices as tools to assist with forensics/incident response. It also covered the use of USB devices as hacking/spy tools.

HTCIA Asia Pacific Chapter Vice President Mr. Richard Kershaw recently published a very interesting article in the Asian Counsel Magazine. The title of the paper is:

"More than just collection: How changes to the US Federal Rules of Civil Procedure affect Asia."

HTCIA Asia Pacific Chapter member Mr. Anthony Lai has recently submitted an article for publication in the PISA Journal (http://www.pisa.org.hk).

Once again, another fantastic training event was held last Saturday, and many thanks go out to the Speaker Mr. Anthony Lai who provided such a professional and well prepared insight into the world of penetration testing.

Anthony conducted his workshop using Virtual Machines (an attacking machine and a victim machine), giving all the attendees an opportunity to try for themselves some of the hacking techniques in a hands on environment. A full classroom testified to the popularity of this event:

Many thanks to Richard Kershaw from Hill and Associates for providing an excellent presentation at short notice on the latest tools and techniques on show at the Annual International HTCIA Conference held recently in San Diego.

The talk provoked interesting discussion among those members present, in particular on the subject of Electronic Discovery. For those who were not able to attend, Richard's presentation can be downloaded from the members area by clicking the heading.

Saturday 5th May saw a good turnout for our first training workshop of the year in the Vocational Training Centre's hands on lab.

Despite the problems presented by the restrictive firewall policies in the venue, presenter Paul Jackson was able to provide an overview of online investigations, and introduce some effective tools that can be used to work in a more efficient and focussed manner.

• internet routing and DNS issues from an investigation perspective
• Advanced BGP and DNS issues
• Understanding http and web server structures
• web forwarders and html tricks to hide detection
• anonymous proxies
• live response tools

Saturday 18th November 2006 saw a unique Workshop held in the Microsoft office, in Pacific Place III, Admiralty HK. Two Tawanese experts in the field of Spyware were flown to HK to deliver an extremely stimulating seminar on latest developments in Spyware writing and analysis techniques.

The morning session saw the 'Birdman' Jeremy demonstrate the new stealth techniques existing in the latest spyware variants which can evade traditional anti-spyware tools.The self-authored malware was demonstrated in a virtual environment and shown to be capable to extract personal data through a firewall.

In the afternoon, PK took over the workshop & demonstrated how to analyse spyware effectively. Using largely open-source tools, he demonstrated how to examine the impact of different types of spyware and how to mitigate the effects.

HTCIA Asia Pacific Chapter member Frank Law has kindly provided us with a copy of his research into illegal file sharing over the Internet. In particular, he has researched the legal aspects of the successful prosecution by HK Customs Department of a HK male for sharing of copyright material using Bit Torrent last year - the first such prosecution worldwide.

In April 2006, the HTCIA Asia Pacific Chapter was honoured to welcome Mr. Hayson Tse, Senior Government Counsel from the HK Department of Justice to present his personal views on IT crime related law reform in HK.

This was the subject of Hayson's Master's Thesis, and is a subject close to his heart. The in-depth research and thought provoking views prompted a great deal of debate and proved to be a highly entertaining evening.

Hayson Tse from the Hong Kong Department of Justice has tirelessly compiled a very useful list of technology terms and their Chinese equivalent.

This list is a must for everyone in HK who works in the field of computer crime & is required to produce reports, briefings or court documents in Chinese.
